The Higher Educational Institution of the Institute of Ecology and Medicine is the first higher educational establishment in Ukraine which combined ecology and medicine in a single educational process.
The Institute was founded on the basis of the Charitable Medical School in Darnitsa region (Kyiv) in 1994 by the order of the Representative of the President of Ukraine with the aim to prepare the specialists for the system of environmental protection and for public health services in Ukraine.
The founders of the Institute are the Charitable Medical School (Ukraine) and the Scientific Production Oncological and Cardiological Centre “Max-Well” (USA).
The Institute of Ecology and Medicine is situated in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The departments are located on the premises of Kyiv clinical hospitals, polyclinics and Scientific-research Institutes.
The Institute has another campus in Tbilisi (Georgia).
The Institute has been licensed to provide education since July 2008 by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
The Institute offers the following programs:
- Dental (five years)
- Medical (six years)
- Pharmaceutical (two years)
- Ecological (four years)
- Laboratory diagnostics (four years)
Ukrainian is an official language of instruction, with the exception of the campus in Tbilisi (Georgia) where Georgian is used for teaching.
Total number of students is 600.
Instructional strategies include lectures, videoconferences, seminars, practical trainings, and self-directed education.
There are Students’ Associations which promote the educational, professional and social development of the enrolled students. The Associations encourage co-operation among students’ organizations from other Ukrainian and European medical universities. They assist in the publication of the student newspaper and create an environment conducive of excellent academic achievement. They also provide social, cultural and athletic activities that would contribute to a healthful and productive society. The Associations of the Institute collaborates with the European Dental Students’ Association.
The Institute of Ecology and Medicine is a full member of CIRCEOS (Interuniversity Centre for Research and Cooperation with Eastern and South-Eastern Europe).
The Institute of Ecology and Medicine employs overall over 600 people. The staff of the Institute consists of about 200 instructors, including:
- 18 Doctors of Medical Science (there are 11 professors and 2 senior research workers among them);
- 3 Doctors of Historical Science (2 professors among them);
- 3 Doctors of Biology Science (1 professor among them);
- 2 Doctors of Chemical Science (1 professor among them);
- 17 Candidates of Medical Science (Kandidat Nauk in Medicine) (9 senior lecturers among them);
- 5 Candidates of Biology Science (Kandidat Nauk in Biology) (2 senior lecturers among them);
- 3 Candidates of Philological Science (Kandidat Nauk in Philology);
- 3 Candidates of Historical Science (Kandidat Nauk in History) (1 senior lecturer among them);
- 2 Candidates of Economical Science (Kandidat Nauk in Economy);
- 2 Candidates of Technical Science (Kandidat Nauk in Technology).
From the History of the Institute
In the period from 1995 to 1999 four cohorts of dentist assistants received their diplomas.
The Institute became a full member of CIRCEOS (Interuniversity Centre for Research and Cooperation with Eastern and South-Eastern Europe) in 2003.
The first cohort of students with Bachelor in Laboratory Diagnostics was graduated in 2005.
The second cohort of students with Bachelor in Laboratory Diagnostics was graduated in 2006.
The first pharmacist students were graduated in 2007; the third cohort of students with Bachelor in Laboratory Diagnostics was graduated in 2007.
In 2008 a Tbilisi (Georgia) campus of the Institute was established.
In 2008 biotechnology, bio-pharmacy and immunotherapy departments were founded.
In 2008 the Institute received a license AB №395924 valid till 2013.
In 2008 the Institute received the certificates of accreditation for Pharmacy and Dentist majors valid till 2013.
The year of 2008 witnessed graduation of the first cohort of dentists, the second cohort of pharmacists, the fourth cohort of students with Bachelor of Laboratory Diagnostics.
The second cohort of dentists and the third cohort of pharmacists were graduated in 2009.
